FIDE Announces New Dress Code for Upcoming World Cup in Goa

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has announced a new dress code for the upcoming FIDE World Cup 2025, which will be held in Goa, India, from October 30 to November 27. This significant chess event on India's West Coast will attract some of the biggest names in the sport.

In a move to provide more flexibility and comfort to players, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich has announced that the official dress code for both the FIDE Grand Swiss and FIDE Women's Grand Swiss events will be updated. The new dress code aims to offer players more comfort and freedom of choice while ensuring a professional and respectful overall appearance.

According to the updated dress code, both men and women are allowed to wear suits, dark business casual trousers (including jeans in blue, black, and grey), unicoloured shirts or blouses, dress shoes or loafers with closed toes, and unicoloured sneakers. Appropriate jeans are now permitted as part of the official dress code, a change that is sure to be welcomed by many players.

This update reaffirms FIDE's commitment to both tradition and progress, creating an environment where players feel comfortable and confident. The new dress code is a testament to FIDE's efforts to make the sport more accessible and inclusive.

India has been a dominant force in chess for several years, with Indian players like Divya Deshmukh and D Gukesh making headlines. Divya Deshmukh, an Indian player, became the first Indian to win the Women's Chess World Cup in July of this year, garnering national attention. D Gukesh, another Indian player, won the World Championship last year.

In fact, Indian teams won the top prize in the Chess Olympiad in both Open and Women's categories last year, further cementing India's position as a chess powerhouse. Divya Deshmukh's victory in the Women's Chess World Cup brought national recognition to her, and her win in Goa is expected to generate similar excitement.

The Open World Cup was hosted in Goa following Divya Deshmukh's win, and the FIDE World Cup 2025 is expected to follow in its footsteps. With the new dress code in place, players can look forward to a more comfortable and inclusive experience at the event.

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich emphasized that FIDE, chess players, arbiters, and officials must collectively strive to preserve the integrity of chess while making the sport appealing to the audience and sponsors. By making these changes, FIDE is ensuring that the sport remains accessible and appealing to a wider audience, while still maintaining its traditional values.

The dress code changes were announced on the FIDE website, and more details about the FIDE World Cup 2025 are expected to be announced in the coming months. With the new dress code in place, players can look forward to a more comfortable and inclusive experience at the event.
