Illegal Gambling Operation in Yakutsk, Russia, Resulting in Multiple Arrests

In a significant development, eight local residents were arrested in Yakutsk, Russia, in March 2024, for illegally organizing and conducting gambling activities. The arrest was made with the support of SOBR Rosgvardiya fighters and police.

The criminal group, led by a married couple, had been operating for two years, from June 2022 to February 2024. They set up two underground gambling clubs in non-residential premises on Sverdlov and Pyrogov streets. Computers were installed in these rented premises to operate on online casino sites.

The gambling activities were conducted outside the gaming zone and on the Internet. The owners of the illegal business assigned roles to their acquaintances within the criminal group, with roles including manager of the gaming hall, cashier-administrator, and security guard.

The Yakutsk City Court found all participants guilty of illegally organizing and conducting gambling, under Part 3 of Article 171.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The verdict regarding the material evidence has been sent for a new trial, but the rest of the judicial act remains unchanged and has entered into legal force.

The Supreme Court of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) made this decision after reviewing the case materials and hearing the opinions of the parties. The new trial will focus only on the material evidence presented in the case.

The outcome of the new trial will have significant implications for the participants, as it could potentially affect their sentences, fines, and future eligibility to engage in gambling-related activities. Sentences for the participants range from 3 years 6 months to 2 years 6 months of imprisonment, with fines from 300,000 to 200,000 rubles, suspended sentences, and a ban on engaging in activities related to gambling for 2 years. The new trial will determine the final outcome of the case, including any potential changes to the sentences or fines for the participants.
